Considering the wider array of languages in the campaign, and the specifics of certain races and cultures, I have decided to add Heritage Backgrounds to the mix. Each character must have one and only one Heritage Background. This background does not count as the character's one background with benefit (see PHB2, page 178). Heritage Backgrounds have the following effects:
* Each Heritage Background grants the character one or more starting languages, in which they are fluent and, if said languages have written forms, literate in. These languages supercede the languages packaged with character race.
* Most languages in Arinoc have multiple dialects, which speakers can use to identify where one another come from. Heritage backgrounds which provide languages with dialects will require the player to choose a dialect. Native speakers may identify the dialect of another native speaker with a DC 10 Insight check (it is possible to take 10 on this check). Non-native speakers may identify the dialect of a native speaker of a language they know with a DC 12 Insight check (non-native speakers may not take 10 on this check).
* Each Heritage Background also provides a +2 bonus to one skill (if two or more skills are listed, choose one to gain a bonus with). This bonus stacks with all others.
You grew up in the Andar Peninsula, and as such you can read and write Andar. You also gain +2 to Endurance.
You grew up among the Calabrian Tribes in what is now known as the Orcish Plain. As such, you speak Calabrian and Orcish (neither of which has a written form of it's own), and gain a +2 bonus to Athletics.
You are a dwarf from the Dvorfjall Holds, and can read and write Dwarven. Additionally, you must choose a caste (see Dvorfjall for more information on the castes), which determines your skill bonus. Andaligur: +2 to Religion. Djarvur: +2 to Athletics. Fjakka: +2 to Diplomacy. Frimurari: +2 to Dungeoneering. Hus: +2 to Nature. Sjonleikari: +2 to Insight.
This background may only be taken by dwarf characters.
You grew up among the Delanic peoples, and as such can read and write Delanic. You also gain a +2 bonus to Nature.
Dialects: Vychodni, Zapadni, Jizni, Sevri.
You grew up either in a shtetl or in Oyneg Shabes, as such you can read and write Delanic, and gain a +2 bonus to Streetwise. This background may only be taken by tiefling characters.
You were born into the dragonborn ruling caste of Ejderha Devlet. You can read and write Ejderhim, and gain a +2 bonus to Religion. This background may only be taken by dragonborn characters.
Ejderhim Low Born
You grew up in Ejderha Devlet. As such you can read and write Ejderhim, and gain a +2 bonus to Religion. This background may be taken by characters of any race other than dragonborn.
You grew up in the kingdom of Tarn. As such you can read and write Tarnic, and gain a +2 bonus to Endurance.
You grew up in a tiefling community somewhere in Bael Turath. As such, you know both Turathi and low Turathi fluently, and gain a +2 bonus to Streetwise. This background may only be taken by tiefling characters.
